As of December 2023, approximately 115,000 Ukrainian refugees are living in Moldova since the influx of Ukrainian refugees began in February 2022. 58% of displaced people are women and girls.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world. According to UNFPA, globally, at least one in three females experiences physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. Humanitarian emergencies, such as the war in Ukraine, increase the risk of GBV as well as trafficking and sexual exploitation and abuse, making it a day-to-day reality for many women and girls.

The Japanese government is supporting the empowerment of women, including those displaced from Ukraine, and for preventing and responding to gender-base violence in Moldova in partnership with UN agencies such as UN Women, UNFPA, and UNDP. Through collaborative projects, we provide protection and care to GBV survivors, including psychological counseling and referrals to legal and health services, and raise awareness for the elimination of violence against women and girls. For empowerment of girls and women, digital labs were established to enhance ICT education in two schools. Numerous trainings regarding financial literacy and entrepreneur skills were also conducted for women to help them start/scale-up their businesses.
